About the Performance
Solitude // Company is a performance dedicated to exploring the interplay between man and machine; to finding the space for human connection within a world filled with digital technology.
In modern society, people seem inseparable from smart technology when it comes to interfacing with the world around them, but do these screens and programs hold the capacity to communicate the wide dynamics and fine intricacies of the human experience? Let this question be seen as an invitation to journey within and visit the inner self, a process that steps beyond the confines of the world we think we know.
This surreal space is where Solitude // Company begins: two musicians each in their personal spheres, gently expressing the architecture of inner thought. As the cloud of digital information grows and further occupies this psychic space, each musician naturally must confront and interact with the digital sounds. This leads them to search for, and play with each other’s presences through this digital veil, which can sometimes be misguided and even disruptive. In the end, the value of these technologies cannot be overlooked; however, we must not forget to look up and participate in, and to celebrate the magic of true communion.
Brandon Lin ft. Steven Ma
Multi-instrumentalist and composer Brandon Lin and drummer Steven Ma are familiar musical partners who have collaborated in various small ensembles, in addition to their own electric latin-jazz band DigiGrass. This duet represents a new direction in creation and live performance for both artists.
About the Principal Artists
Brandon Lin
Brandon Lin is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and arranger originally from Hsinchu, Taiwan. His playing and creations are consistently described as being filled with expressive and creative energy, drawing from visual art, fantasy, and personal experiences.
Lin has performed in venues all across North America during his studies at Berklee College of Music as a Slaight Scholar, most notably at the Kennedy Centre, and Dizzy’s Jazz Club. Since moving to Taipei in 2020, he has collaborated with pop artists such as Jerry Li, Leo Wang, Karencici, and participating in the local jazz scene with bands such as DigiGrass and The Great Game.
Steven Ma
A fellow member of DigiGrass, Steven first started playing drums in 2011 and traveled to New York City in 2014 to study extensively for two months with Ian Forman, Tommy Campbell, and other important drummers. After returning to Taiwan, Ma has performed, recorded, and taught as a professional musician for countless projects, but something was calling him back to New York. In 2016 he traveled once again to NYC to study at The Drummer Collective School with his old mentor Forman, as well as Vince Cherico, Peter Retzalff… etc. Ma received his diploma in 2018.
