Two of the most prominent Taiwanese choreographer-dancers join hands to explore what it means for the human body in our constant movement towards the superlative in the age of the climate crisis. Probing into transformations of their bodies with objects and video images, the duo reappropriates the correlations between the human body and its environment.

Confronted with climate change and its catastrophic aftermath, “SUPER” indicates extremes— super rich/poor, hot/cold, fast/slow, big/small. In the 4.5 billion years of the earth's history, it is unprecedented that a single species can have such an impact on the entire nature, Super! What would the body become in this ceaseless surge in scale and imbalance? What noises are in incubation?

Conjuring up visceral images with their bodies,  Lin Yu-Ju and Tien Hsiao-Tzu speculate on the possible metamorphosis of the human body in future scenarios in which orders and hierarchies are radically reimagined.

Yu-Ju Lin

Born in Hualien, Taiwan. Graduated from the Graduate Institute of Dance, Taipei National University of the Arts. A former dancer, now a freelance artist, she is mainly engaged in corporal creations, performances and outreach programs. Her works often focus on educational and cultural context. She is fond of minimalism, but also fascinated by chaos and collages. Recently she often incorporates objects, behavioral observation and historical images into her works, and uses the universality to contrast with the particularity of characters, attempting to unsettle the audience’s perceptions and thoughts.
 

 

Hsiao-Tzu Tien

Freelance choreographer, dancer and performer. Born in 1984 in Tainan, Taiwan. In recent years, Tien puts focus of her choreography research on human emotions shaped by time, history, culture and environment. Regarding choreography as the chisel of life, Tien attempts to cut away the contradictions and labels that hinder self-exploration, and uncover powerful emotions deposited in the body. While looking into the desire and fear in life, she also looks for the exits of life’s trajectories, as well as their various possibilities. She also develops the potentials of body and movements through international exchange and collaboration with theater or performance arts, keeping connected with foreign cultures and other disciplines.
