Body Planty Party
A group of indigenous plants have just settled in the Rooftop Garden: mountain marigold, melastoma, Taiwan Littleleaf Box and more. To greet them, musician, media/performance artist Betty Apple paired up with sound artist Homing Hsieh in the second concert of the series to launch a party for both plants and people.
Together with plant whisperers, fortune-tellers and botanists, Body Planty Party rejects ideas of human exceptionalism and explores potentials of trans-species communication through science and telepathy. Participants are welcome to join with their plants the drag of the fabulous Feilibing Ice Queen and Fei Fain and dress up as our verdant fellow organisms.
While plant whisperers help us to converse with our plants, a touch IC installation allows us to dance with them, swinging to a playlist of their choice. As the night falls, the party starts, queering boundaries between genders, species, and identities.
Betty Apple & Homing Hsieh
Betty Apple, based in Taipei, graduated from the Drama Department and the New Media Art program at Taipei National University of the Arts. She is known for her artistic practices in sound art, performance art, electronic music, DJing, and RAVE planning, among others, which she uses for her body politics.
In recent years, Betty has performed at various international events such as the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Sydney LiveWorks Experimental Art Festival, Melbourne Fringe Festival, MONA FOMA Arts Festival in Australia, Santarcangelo Arts Festival in Italy, Taipei Arts Festival, Other Futures Science Fiction Art Festival in the Netherlands, Apexart in New York, CTM Festival in Berlin, Jogja Biennale in Indonesia, WSK Sound Art Festival in Manila, and Nuit Blanche Taipei.
Homing Hsieh holds a Bachelor's degree in Cultural Studies from Leipzig University and a Master's degree in Sound Studies and Sonic Art from Berlin University of the Arts. His sound walks and sound installation works have been presented at art festivals such as Berlin's 48 Stunden Neukölln.
After graduation and returning to Taiwan, he served as a lecturer for the Sound Art course at Tunghai University.
For the past twenty years, his reviews and contributing writings on music have appeared in various media, including music channel websites and design magazines. He has also written 500 times column titled "Sound Dust." Occasionally, he assumes the pseudonym “Gemnital” and hides behind the DJ booths.
