HORSE: FreeSteps NiNi
Launched in 2013, this choreographic series, titled FreeSteps, has demonstrated choreographer SU Wei-Chia’s mastery. He meticulously contours the body of every dancer in an almost sculptural manner. Condensed and distilled over extended performance durations, his FreeSteps episodes are refined into contemporary body landscapes. FreeSteps – NiNi is a choreographic piece tailor-made for an outstanding dancer like FANG Yu-Ting, who brilliantly captures the dance stage, herself and the changing surroundings as parts of her dance in a succinct yet detail-minded way. During sunset hours, the presence of a lamp grows as the sun heads for the horizon. Just like Taipei’s unique cityscape with elusive light and shadow, all the surroundings on site merges with the performer. As the audience’s senses are amplified to the greatest, a spatial freeze and serene silence is formed, creating a two-way bodily dialogue and stimulating process for the dancer and the audience – “a three-dimensional study best appreciated in person,” as described by the New York Times.

Li-chin LI: Landscape on the New Horizon of Sheng : A Tale of Two Cities
In recent years, Taiwanese sheng player Li-chin Li, who has garnered significant attention in the international contemporary performing arts scene, will bring a new production to this Showcase: "Landscape on the New Horizon of Sheng : A Tale of Two Cities," featuring its second chapter. "Vox II" captures natural sounds, conducting a poetic forest stroll amidst the incessant environmental soundscape. Meanwhile, "Chants Pour Cyber Nostalgie" showcases seven fragments, exploring the interplay between the virtual and the real. Through the sheng, it interprets cyberpunk aesthetics, combined with tightly integrated lighting interactions, guiding the audience into the central concept of "A Tale of Two Cities" — a paradoxically distant yet "tangibly reachable" notion.
*This performance is commissioned by C-LAB 2023 Sound Art Festival.
