We’re introducing families with no experience of Peking opera to a delightful summer afternoon’s first encounter in a simple and relaxed manner. The tale features the well-known Eastern legendary figure Sun Wukong. Originally a stone monkey, the Monkey King seeks greater power and ventures to the Dragon Palace to borrow a weapon suitable for him from the Dragon King’s son. After testing various weapons and finding none to his satisfaction, he finally chooses the Magic Cudgel. The Dragon Prince had promised to give it to Wukong if he could lift the 13,500 jin (about 8,100 kg or 17,857 lbs) weapon. However, the prince went back on his promise, prompting the Monkey King to unleash his fury and create chaos in the Dragon Palace.
