Yuka Seki
Yuka Seki (b. 1997) is a performance artist based in Japan. She critically views art history and art forms that are based on the body of the majority, and focuses on the body of the minority, the so-called “Weak Body”. “Being with others” and “Creating safety in the exhibition space” are the themes that have run through recent works.
She creates performance, prints, and exhibitions in relation to others who have specific problems causing their body weak, such as raising children, illness, harassment, and secrets that cannot be disclosed to others. The base of creation is made from the very close collaboration and dialogue with specific individuals (close friends).
Her solo exhibition Giving an account of myself partially (2020, Gallery Nao NAKAMURA), collaborated with Nao Nakamura who is an art director and her friend, presents the possibility of disclosing personal issues such as child care and illness.
At the same time, she also supports harassment survivors, disseminating related information and operating self-help groups for survivors of sexual violence. She is the representative of “Be with Ayano Anzai”, a support group for Ayano Anzai, who is a survivor of harassment in the art industry in Japan.
