Dancing Home
At the peak of his choreographic career, Bulareyaung felt lost. He returned to his hometown, in Taiwan’s Taitung County, to work with young Indigenous performers and create art that is inspired by their lives. These mostly untrained dancers are pursuing their dreams in their homeland, and their free-spirited personalities remind him of his own youth. Surrounded by dancers who feel like family, childhood friends, and a disapproving father, he gradually realizes that returning to his Indigenous community through dance has rekindled the child within him.
The Seven Season (2025)
This is the story of a young man from Manipur, Surjit Nongmeikapam, who has become one of the most influential Indian choreographers.
Since May 2023, Manipur has experienced violence, displacement, curfews, Internet blackouts, kidnappings, and killings. The Seven Season follows Nongmeikapam's journey from the marginal to the political, encapsulated in his dances of resilience and protest.
This film is part of the SoftMachine Project - a 10-year documentary series by Choy Ka Fai. It was initiated in 2012 as an independent survey of the choreographic landscape in Asia, with a focus on the ecologies of independent dance makers.
