2026 TIPRF - Lecture II | Play Development in Taiwan: From Script to Publication to Incubation

Lecture/Talk/Seminar
2026-06-20 - 2026-06-20

Centering on the script as its core subject, this lecture will revisit the development of Taiwanese scripts from performance texts to literary texts, tracing their evolution and transformation across different historical periods. It will examine the early forms of scripts that were primarily performance-oriented, the gradual emergence of “fixed texts” that could be preserved and read, and the ways in which scripts entered the publishing system to become part of literature and academic research. The lecture will then extend into the context of contemporary theatre, exploring how scripts have entered incubation and development mechanisms, and considering the fluid relationship of playwriting across creation, dramaturgy, and production, as well as how different support systems influence the generation and transformation of texts. By weaving together historical context and contemporary practice, this lecture aims to outline the broader trajectory of Taiwanese script development and further reflect on the position and possibilities of the script in contemporary theatre.
