★ To listen to the sounds of the ocean through percussion
★ An interactive concert designed for children and family
Starting with the drumming that sounds like waves surrounding us, we feel as if we became tiny boats, slowly sailing out to sea. Then pushed by the waves of the sounds of different musical instruments, an amazing sea journey is about to begin.
Taiwan is an island surrounded by the ocean; no matter where we go, we seem to hear the waves. Sometimes, the waves feel like a pair of soft hands, gently patting the shore; sometimes, they act like an energetic lion cub, jumping merrily. Throughout our lives, we seem to be closely connected to “water.” Before we were born, we were surrounded by warm water in our mothers’ wombs. As cities get increasingly populated and the industries slowly develop, the ocean also quietly changes. Some parts of it are no longer clean and clear and some parts of it sound different. When we close our eyes and listen carefully, the ocean seems to be speaking softly – what is it trying to tell us?
The interactive party version of Embrace the Ocean sustainable family concert leads adults and children to feel how changeable the ocean is through percussion, sounds, and rhythms. Sometimes, the ocean is quiet, sometimes boisterous, and sometimes it needs care too. In this performance, we not only sit and listen to the music but become “part of the ocean,” using our bodies, ears, and imagination to feel the ocean’s emotions.
With the theme, “walk into the ocean, hear it cry and make changes together,” Embrace the Ocean lets children feel the power of the ocean in percussion, using sounds “to depict” the sea imagined in their minds. Via sound design, director’s guidance, and the plot that allows parents to interact with their children, this production turns the serious environmental issues into an audio story that children can understand and get involved. By weaving music into sounds, it becomes another way for children to understand nature and sustainability and for art to become an entrance through which we walk into cities, communities, and the ocean.
Taipei Percussion
Founded in 1986, Taipei Percussion is one of the most representative percussion ensembles in Taiwan. In recent years, they have continued to broaden their creative vision, blend sustainable value into their curatorial thinking and take part in discussing public issues with music. They aim to bring music from the stage to the audience and use sounds to walk into people’s stories and memories. Starting from Taiwan, they march towards the world with rhythm and determination.
