PoYouTroupe《Mnemosyne》

2024-09-13 - 2024-09-15

"Mnemosyne" begins with the vanished Qing dynasty royalty attending the now-defunct flag-raising ceremony, setting the stage to observe a group of 10-year-old children learning Peking Opera. Under the anxieties of a turbulent era, societal division, and escalating violence, they inevitably abandon Peking Opera and choose to disappear.

The sensational "Guoguang Incident" marked both an end and a beginning on a tense, anxiety-ridden line. It was a microcosm of an era and a vanished Peking Opera that belonged exclusively to that time.

In "Mnemosyne," director Hsu PoAng uses the physicality of traditional Chinese opera to present contemporary Peking Opera symbols, telling a story he deeply cares about. You can witness the beauty of "singing, reciting, acting, and acrobatics" in Chinese opera and see how the script reflects on the land. Hsu uses his favorite performance style to narrate the poignant history he is most passionate about.
