About the Performance

The Leifeng Pagoda: A Soundscape Reimagined

This is not merely a retelling of The Leifeng Pagoda—it is an invitation to step inside its world.

In this production, sound moves beyond the stage, flowing through the theater and surrounding the audience. Whispers, rhythms, and echoes travel like breath and emotion, transforming sound from background accompaniment into a living presence that shapes the performance.

The story looks beyond idealized romance to reveal the complexity of human nature. Bai Suzhen embodies fearless devotion and the courage to love, while Xu Xian’s hesitation and fear reflect a deeply human vulnerability. As the boundary between human and demon begins to blur, the legend raises a timeless question: who is truly more frightening?

Blending traditional Kunqu performance with contemporary sound design, The Leifeng Pagoda becomes an immersive theatrical experience. Rather than simply watching the story unfold, audiences are invited to feel it—resonating through space, through the body, and lingering long after the final sound fades.

Taiwan Kunqu Opera Theatre was founded in 2000 as the successor to the Kunqu Transmission Program. Led by Professor Tseng Yong-yih and Professor Hung Wei-chu, the Kunqu Transmission Program received support from the Council for Cultural Affairs (now Ministry of Culture) and the National Center for Traditional Arts. Kunqu masters from across mainland China were invited to help train a group of Kunqu performers in Taiwan. Hung later established Taiwan Kunqu Opera Theatre to build on the plan’s success. Its founding members were primarily artists trained under the Transmission Program. By recruiting young Taiwanese performers over the years, the theater has developed a full ensemble spanning all traditional role types. It has collaborated with over 50 performers and musicians and has been supported by a professional Kunqu ensemble. With an extensive repertoire, the theater has already performed a total of 14 full-version Kunqu operas, including The Peony Pavilion and The Story of Jade Hairpin and over 50 short plays and excerpts. Its performances across China, Japan, Germany and Austria have earned wide acclaim. Apart from producing and performing, the theater has held various educational and promotional workshops and campus outreach performances. Its recent projects include Rising Stars of Taiwan Kunqu, Dream of Kunqu Opera in the Red Chamber series and immersive performances. While pushing for the promotion and continuation of Kunqu arts, Taiwan Kunqu Opera Theatre seeks to add vitality to traditional opera.
