About the Performance
Some melodies never leave us. The sweeping grandeur of Star Wars, the soaring themes of Indiana Jones, the haunting lyricism of Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence — these are the sounds that shaped our imaginations and marked the passages of our lives.
To celebrate its 40th anniversary, Taipei Percussion Ensemble brings together nearly five decades of beloved film music in a single evening. From John Williams and Ennio Morricone to Danny Elfman and beyond, the program draws from the great cinematic traditions of the United States, Italy, France, Japan, and the United Kingdom.
But this is not a tribute concert. Working alongside French arrangers François Vallet, Hugo Van Rechem, and Simon Nebout, Malaysian composer Jolene Khor, and Taiwanese musicians Ting-Chuan Chen and Yen-Yu Chuang, TPE reimagines each score from the ground up. Percussion holds an extraordinary range — from the warmth of wood to the shimmer of metal, from the punch of skin to the depths of electronic sound. Each piece arrives in its own intimate, chamber-like configuration, allowing melodies we thought we knew to reveal something we have never quite heard before.
Familiar melodies. Entirely new sounds. The landscapes we carry within us, waiting to be heard again.
