What is Rakugo?
Rakugo is a traditional Japanese art of solo storytelling. A performer sits on stage and portrays multiple characters through voice, expression, and subtle gestures. Stories are carefully developed through pacing and narrative, culminating in a punchline or concluding twist known as the ochi (“fall”). While many rakugo stories are comedic, they can also be dramatic, touching, or even eerie. At its heart, rakugo is the art of bringing stories to life.
“Rakugo is Japanese—will the performances be in Japanese? What if I can’t understand it?”
This event features Taiwanese rakugo performers presenting stories from the manga and anime Akane-banashi in Mandarin Chinese, offering an accessible introduction to the world of rakugo.
Through live performances and guided explanations, audiences will discover the unique appeal of rakugo while enjoying complete storytelling performances.
With nothing more than a performer, a folding fan, and a hand towel, countless characters and situations come to life on stage. Experience laughter, imagination, human emotion, and the timeless charm of rakugo firsthand.
