How can traditional performing arts once again take place and be appreciated in the future? The dance piece Ban Xian contemplates the enduring need for belief and deities in folk culture, while also highlighting the impact of recent social movements in Taiwan. This work interlaces historical memories, issues of gender identities, traditional arts, and its ceremonial framework.
In Ban Xian, choreographer Huang Huai-Te reexamines a particular ceremonial event within the Xiqu (traditional Han opera) culture and Taoist rituals. Like other fading forms of performance, Ban Xian, which serves as the opening act before the opera, is immensely affected by various modern media. Borrowing a comforting form of ritual, Ban Xian recreates an opportunity for both the artist and the audience to engage in a dialogue with tradition and rediscover the possible meaning of culture.
Taiwan｜Huai-Te Huang
A dancer and a choreographer, founder of Dashing Theater. Dashing came from the character “Chuang” (闖) in Mandarin, which also means to rush, to experience, to challenge and to have an impact. Huang chose it to remind himself to be brave in continuous innovation and embrace change. He aims to create absorbing and engaging images with dance by interweaving Taiwanese historical memories with contemporary issues. Huang’s concerns include: how to connect people with dance, and how to bring their attention to societal issues through dance. Before the establishment of Dashing Theater in 2020, Huang was a dancer and choreographer at Horse Dance Theater.
Dashing Theater
Dashing Theater (Chuang Theater) was established in 2019. "Chuang" means impact, rush, experience, and challenge in Mandarin, which reminds us the essence of creation. Therefore, the word “Chuang” is used as our group name to remind ourselves to keep our original intentions and dare to challenge.
The main creator, Huai-Te Huang, has been using the somatic aesthetics of "Taiwanese" contemporary dance as the foundation to find the possibility of choreography.
After ten years in the industry, Huai-Te founded Dashing Theater, hoping to facilitate the audiences’ participation in dance performances and help develop a robust environment for the next generation of creators.
Other than creation, how can dance connect more people? How can we bring more attention to social issues through dance? Dashing Theater aims to promote contemporary dance in Taiwan through our practical actions.
