In O Samba do Crioulo Doido, choreographer Luiz de Abreu uses dance as a means to deconstruct racialized identities. By having Calixto Neto embody the stereotypes associated with the representation of the black body, which is deeply ingrained in Brazil (and elsewhere) and often oscillates between exoticism and eroticism, de Abreu cleverly uses the cliché to expose and ridicule the unconscious racists. In this radical solo performance, he deploys a unique choreographic language to reexamine the concept of identity within the very materiality of the body. The violence of his writing appears to align with the urgency of addressing the decolonial issue, the enduring consequences of slavery, and the current power dynamics.
Carried by transgressive humor, the piece offers a straightforward critique of the subordinate condition to which blacks are assigned. From penis games to gestures of reappropriating the national flag, the idea here is to view dance as a tool for physical liberation, with the power to emancipate and transform. It is a cry that shifts the perception of the body from an object to a subject. In this new version of the piece, de Abreu and Neto have focused on constructing a language of transmission. Through orality, the methodological procedures they developed allow the production of knowledge to transmit from one black body to another.
Brazil|Luiz de Abreu
Born in Minas Gerais, Luiz Augusto Barbosa (known as Luiz de Abreu) discovered dance in the 1960s through the rituals of the Afro-Brazilian Umbanda religion. The choreographer-interpreter graduated from the Angel Vianna School of Contemporary Dance in Rio de Janeiro and holds a master's degree from the University of Uberlândia in Minas Gerais. Mainly focused on exploring stereotypes related to the black body, de Abreu's work has been shown in France, Germany, Portugal, Croatia, Cuba, Spain, Finland, Switzerland, Belgium and Brazil, where he currently resides. His piece O Samba do Crioulo Doido is part of the Centre Pompidou's video-dance collection.
