Michikazu Matsune deploys his performance as a means to examine cultural ascriptions and patterns of social identification. Dance, if you want to enter my country! investigates a little-known incident, an utterly bizarre yet true event that took place in 2008. At the Tel Aviv International Airport, an African-American dancer, a member of the world-renowned Alvin Ailey Modern Dance Company from New York City, was stopped at passport control. As part of a rigorous interrogation prompted by suspicions surrounding his Muslim first name, he was eventually forced to perform a dance in front of border security officers in order to verify his profession and identity. Through a series of expanded actions in a highly personal manner and with a fine sense of humor, Michikazu Matsune explores an alternative perspective to examine the dark side of globalization paranoia, profiling and surveillance.
Japan|Michikazu Matsune
Originally from Kobe, Japan, and based in Vienna, Austria, since the 1990s, Michikazu Matsune is an artist who employs a distinctive approach that combines documentary and conceptual methods. His work, characterized as both critical and playful, has been presented by numerous institutions and festivals worldwide. His latest stage work, Kono atari no dokoka (2023), in collaboration with French choreographer Martine Pisani, premiered at this year’s Festival d'Avignon. His other stage performances include Mitsouko & Mitsuko (2021), which centers the stories of two Japanese women with nearly identical names who experienced the turbulence of global modernization in the first half of the 20th century. All Together (2018) explores the absence of those who cannot come and see this particular show, while Goodbye (2016) is based on farewell letters from a global archive. Matsune is the initiator of the Homesick Festival (since 2016), a unique performance festival that has been held in private homes in Vienna, Düsseldorf, and Zagreb. In response to the pandemic, he organized Performance Homework (2020) featuring do-it-yourself-works by 25 artists that can be realized at home individually. Matsune teaches performance practice and is currently a visiting tutor at Kunst Universität Linz and Iceland University of the Arts.
