THE WEDDING BANQUET musical, based on the 1993 Oscar-nominated film by Ang Lee, is originally conceived and developed by Welly Yang, book and lyrics by Tony ®- winner Brian Yorkey and music by Woody Pak. Many years later, Welly Yang, along with playwright Matt Eddy, has reworked the book and lyrics, while preserving Brian Yorkey's original lyrics. Woody Pak and Tony ® & Grammy ® - nominee AnnMarie Milazzo have rearranged the songs for this new reversion.

 

THE WEDDING BANQUET is one of the few successful indie films, and it is also one of the most reputable works from international director Ang Lee. It not only has won the Berlin International Film Festival’s Golden Bear Award, but also nominated for The Academy Award, and the Golden Globe’s best foreign film. This musical adaptation that created by the masters from Broadway is no doubt the best interpretation of the fusion in western-oriental culture, which definitely will win the hearts of cross-cultured audiences in both Asia and America.

 

Prior officially perform in the United States, the new revision musical will premiere in Taiwan this spring beginning on May 24th at the Taipei Performing Arts Center the with following run at National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts and in other regions of Taiwan! ▎SYNOPSIS

Wai Tung Gao, born into a Taiwan’s traditional medical family, is a successful businessman in New York City (NYC). He faces pressure from his Taiwanese parents to marry. However, he has a BOYFRIEND, Simon. To hide the truth and to help Wai Tung’s ex, Wei Wei Gu, with her visa issue, Wai Tung enters a FAKE marriage with her. Chaos erupts when his parents visit, resulting in misunderstandings, a staged wedding banquet, and unexpected consequences including a pregnancy. As tensions escalate, Wai Tung must confront his true feelings amidst family turmoil.
