"Echoes of Silence"
— Redefining Language, Body, and Identity at the Margins
Within the frameworks of society as we know it, certain bodies are always relegated to the margins. They are silent, yet brimming with energy; absent from dominant languages, yet speaking their existence through other forms.
"Echoes of Silence" is curated by Lois Pan, who provides the overarching conceptual framework. Three artists respond from different perspectives to the isolation and tensions that marginalized communities experience in society, digital spaces, and intimate relationships. The three works, though independent, intertwine like converging currents of thought—collectively echoing the drifting bodily states on the edges of mainstream society and heralding an ongoing revolution of language.
"The Silent World" | Creator: Lin Ching Lan
From a silent village: we listen more closely to the echoes within and feel the vitality of life moving through stillness.
In this piece, the appearance of “soldiers” symbolizes the suppression of diverse voices by external authoritarian forces. Their marching and uniforms represent the oppression of freedom. Their commands enforce self-censorship among villagers, further stifling already scarce "voices." Yet it is precisely this pressure that fuels a stronger, silent resistance—a dance of sign language.
May the audience follow this wordless journey and witness how hands alone can compose the most moving symphony.
"1 + 2 + 3 + ... + ∞ Times" | Creator: Chen Yi Chin
Modern society often equates “equality” with freedom. However, this work seeks to disrupt such idealized, linear visions. True equality is not merely about protection or accessibility—it is about empowerment: the right of every person, regardless of who they are or whether they can "hear," to experience intimacy, desire, loneliness, and emotional complexity.
This piece begins with the sensual experiences of three deaf performers, embarking on a silent bodily exploration. Through touch, vision, and vibration, they construct an alternative language of desire. Movement and action become the medium of intimate communication, generating a shared emotional frequency that pulses in silence.
It is not a reenactment of deaf experience, but a probing of intimacy itself—not to fill a perceived absence, but to invite audiences to see that even within silence, there are echoes of longing, and within distance, profound emotional resonance—transforming desire into a gateway for healing and empathy.
"SINGNET "| Creator: Lois Pan
"SINGNET" uses physical theatre as its language, inviting audiences to put down their mice and phones and return to the body—the most primal transmitter of signals.
As language becomes subtitles and emotions are compressed into emojis, do we still remember how the body once spoke? Can we still recognize the truth in each other through this digital haze? This is not a one-way performance, but a shared, conspiratorial experience. On this web-woven stage, we reflect together: Who is speaking? Who is understanding? Who is in control? And who is losing it?
"SINGNET" does not offer answers, but instead reveals a mirror hidden between the gaps in the signal—a glimpse of the “self” once exiled by digital noise, now seeking to return in its truest form.
