During the summer of World War II, amidst the hovering of B29 bombers over Japan, 14-year-old Seita and his 4-year-old sister Setsuko flee their home to escape the turmoil of war. After enduring numerous hardships, they find a brief moment of happiness in an air raid shelter, but their good fortune is short-lived as Setsuko weakens from hunger. Despite everything, Seita is determined to protect his sister until the very end...
In 2022, the Theatre Space adapted the famous semi-autobiographical novel 'Grave of the Fireflies' by Akiyuki Nosaka into a Cantonese musical based on the anime of the same name. In 2024, 'Grave of the Fireflies' will be presented for the first time in a full Mandarin version to Taiwanese audiences, allowing families into the world of musical theater together.
Theatre Space
Theatre Space, established in 1998, has been dedicated itself to broadening the horizon of theatrical arts despite the limitation of space. Through our performances, the Theatre endeavors to stimulate the imagination of the audience and to offer them some vivid experience of the real life, hence fostering a closer interaction between the theatre and the community. For years we focus in producing translated plays to embody the concept of Scenography and Theatrical Arts with Contemporary Drama to the community and to strengthen the recognition of Scenography as a form o f Theatre works in Hong Kong . We have produced quality stage productions since we established as well as other school touring projects, Theatre Education Programs, Community Art Programs.
Theatre Space has received numerous awards in Hong Kong, including Best Director, Best Script, Best Actress, Best Stage Design, and has consistently been recognized as one of the Top 10 Most Popular Productions. It has also received multiple nominations for Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Stage Design, Best Sound Design, Best Original Music, and Best Overall Performance. The Theatre has been invited three times to perform at the Tainan Arts Festival, setting records in both critical acclaim and box office success. In 2020, in collaboration with the Our Theatre, it was nominated for the 19th Taishin Arts Awards for the Mandarin-Cantonese musical "The State & Denki". In 2022, the Cantonese version of " Grave of The Fireflies" received a nomination for Best Original Music (Musical) at the 31st Hong Kong Theatre Awards in 2023.
